Peter McVerry Homelessness Trust: Sleep Out
On Thursday night last, staff and LCA2 students of Ramsgrange Community School took part in a “sleep out” to raise awareness around the issue of homelessness. This wonderful event was the brainchild of School Chaplain, Miss Marie McCabe. Miss McCabe explained where the idea came from – “Friday 10th was World Homelessness Day and I wanted students to take part in the “stamp out homelessness” campaign run by the Peter McVerry Trust. I came up with the idea of a sleep out to raise awareness and funds for the Peter McVerry trust. Student were very enthusiastic about the idea and after getting permission from Principal Rachel O’ Connor, permission letters were sent out to get parental consent; the Peter McVery Trust sent out their campaign pack as well as sponsorship cards and we set a time to meet at the school Thursday night. The weather Thursday night was not too bad, around 12 degrees and a full moon, although we did have quite a bit of rain during the night.
The Students found this a most enlightening experience. All agreed that it was an experience they will never forget. This event was very relevant for the LCA group as it ties in with their Contemporary issues task. One student in particular, Kelly Davitt who is doing her task on the issue of homelessness was delighted to be involved.
The excitement continued Friday morning as students were interviewed on BEAT FM at 8.15 in the morning and later interviewed by Alan Corcoran on South East Radio, where students got the opportunity to speak with Fr Peter McVerry. Fr McVerry was most grateful to our student for the effort they had made to raise funds and awareness around the issue of homelessness; and has committed to visit the school in November. Students enjoyed breakfast together Friday morning to celebrate – Thank you Miss Cullinane.
The students involved were – Shane Roche, Emmet King, Jade Byrne, Johannah Mulligan, Helena Astley, Emma Rooney, Nicole Hutchinson and Kelly Davitt. They were accompanied by staff- Marie McCabe, Aoife Power, Imelda Hayes and Mary Cullinane . They were most appreciative to have Miss O’ Connor and Mr Berry call during the sleep out to offer moral support.
On Friday next the LCA students will welcome staff and clients from the Peter McVerry Trust to the school to present them with a cheque. This event as raised almost one thousand euro with donations still coming in!
All involved would like to thank Richard and Helene Tobin who supplied us with Cardboard to sleep on! Also huge thanks to the local fast food restaurant in Ramsgrange who delivered hot food around 11 o’ clock – this was greatly appreciated, thanks also to the delivery men – Timmy Stafford and Sean Hayes. Finally huge thanks to School Chaplain for organising the event .
