YSI – Speak Out 2015
Raise the Alarm on Self-Harm
In Transition Year in RCS, the students are given the opportunity to participate in a project known as Young Social Innovators (YSI). This project motivates and creates new opportunities for young people to actively participate in the world around them.
It is believed that young people are a powerful and largely untapped force for change in their local communities and in wider society. It seeks to engage young people wherever they are – in schools, communities, youth organisations, in families, in or out of work – and prepare them to fully take part in civic action whether through volunteerism, community service, service – learning, citizenship education, social entrepreneurship and innovation.
The idea of the project is to select any social issue that affects you or that you think is relevant in today’s society. This year, the Transition Years chose the social issue of Self-Harm. The reason that we chose this as our social issue is because we feel that it is a relevant problem in our school and community.
Our project has to have an “action”. In this case, we chose to raise awareness about the issue of self harm within our school. We targeted 2nd years because we believe that there is a relevant problem of self harming in that year. We also have reason to believe that self harming tends to start in 2nd year. We will also present our Speak Out at 1st year assembly 18th March 2015.
